I’ve just come back from two weeks in France in which I kept active by running and reading every day.

In order to remember some of the things that I read, and help others enjoy some of the best books, I wanted to do a short synopsis of each of the books that I read and then, time permitting, some of the key themes that I was learning about. They aren’t intended as formal book reviews; just the key things that I took out of them.

I brought together my reading list by referring to the speakers at the RSA over the last year, entrants to the Orwell Prize and recommendations from Amazon, based on my previous purchases. There were three key themes:

  • Organising people – democracy and the internet
  • The economy
  • Foreign policy and future world affairs

I’ll update this list as I go along with my notes.

  1. A view from the foothills by Chris Mullin
  2. Tribes by Seth Godin
  3. Democracy by Paul Ginsborg
  4. Here comes everybody by Clay Shirky
  5. Return of depression economics by Paul Krugman
  6. The new paradigm for financial markets by George Soros
  7. Animal spirits by George Akerlof and Robert Shiller
  8. Who runs Britain? by Robert Peston
  9. Gang Leader for a Day by Sudhir Venkatesh
  10. Understanding Terror Networks by Marc Sageman
  11. A choice of enemies by Lawrence Freedman
  12. Rivals: how the power struggle between China, India and Japan will shape our next decade by Bill Emmott
